Why do dogs cry at night

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs make wonderful pets because these are happy animals. The seemingly grinning face and the enthusiastically wagging tail are trademarks of man's best friends. Pet owners can confirm that when it comes to affection and happiness, dogs are unrivaled. Dogs make wonderful pets because of the loads of fun they give the family but these pets are not without faults.

Because of the human-like qualities, we consider our dogs as well loved and well cared for members of the family. Puppies will entertain the family the whole day with their endearing antics but it would be a different matter when it is time to sleep. It would be very hard to resist adorable puppies but mind you, these cuddly little ones can keep you up all night. Puppies are usually the ones that cry at night but older dogs disturb the master's sleep too with the pitiful whining and crying. Why are dogs crying at night?

Crying at night is common in puppies that were just taken from the breeder. Excited about the new pet, the family members will take turns to play with the new puppy. But at night when the company has gone to sleep, the pup will start to feel lonely. The puppy will now realize that the surrounding is unfamiliar and that the mother and the litter mates are nowhere to be found. Realizing that it is in a dark unfamiliar place, the frightened puppy will bark, whine and cry to entice the family to come.

Crying at night is not manifested by puppies alone. Mature dogs though would have different reasons for crying at night. Dog owners have to provide the pet with opportunities to interact with people and with other dogs as they are social animals. In spite of being energetic animals, dogs love to sleep too and if given a chance, the pet will sleep the day away.

Dogs that are left alone at home all day would either develop a destructive behavior or would remain the ideal pet and sleep the day away. Because the family is now around, the dog that has been sleeping all day is now ready to play. Of course the dog is not aware of your need to sleep. A dog that has no one to play with will cry. A dog cries at night if it wants to go potty. It can also be a symptom of a medical concern. Sick dogs that cry at night would need the master's attention but habitual crying must be ignored so as not to reinforce the bad habit.
