The Many Benefits Of Using Hoof Boots

By Shari Swanson

Horse lovers all over the world are always looking for ways to make their equine friends happier and more comfortable, which will ultimately make them easier to ride and perform better. Many people use hoof boots as an alternative to shoes. They are also a great way to expose your horse to being barefoot.

Should you decide to take your horses shoes off in order to be more natural, the transition period is made easier if special foot wear is used. A deshod foot can be extremely sensitive; discomfort and pain may be eased by using protective shoes. Not all horses are the same, and some need to wear the shoes for longer than others.

Horses suffering with abscesses, navicular disease or laminitis can often find relief and comfort in these shoes. They also provide protection to the frog. These shoes assist the process of healing, and eliminate the chances of the horse damaging the foot any further.

Your local tack shop will be able to offer a variety of designs and models. Some styles are equipped with added padding, which will minimize any chafing and rubbing. Designs suited for growth stimulation are available for horses with soft feet.

Shoes come in sizes to fit ponies and horses; however, finding the correct fit could mean trying on a few different sizes. When taking measurements for the best possible fit, make sure that the width and length of the foot is as close to the boot as possible. You may not find a boot that fits 100%, however, they are able to be adjusted, and a boot that is a little too big is better than one that will put pressure onto the foot because it is too small.

There are three types of boot categories; rehabilitation, soaking and ride and work designs. Make sure that you choose the best hoof boots for your horse. Your equine vet or farrier should be able to offer sound advice on which model to go for.
