At what age can a male dog breed?

By Jerry Welsh

Gosh, my dog has barely left puppyhood but it is already mounting my friend's pet. Unlike female dogs, male dogs are always sexually active and the interest in sex is acquired very early. Dogs that still have the chubby and cuddly appearance of puppies will be seen humping and trying to mount female dogs that are much bigger and older. Male dogs would make sexual advances to other male dogs.

Puppies would be seen humping and mounting the litter mates. The sexual advances dogs show not only to other dogs but also to other animals would point to the fact that dogs are oversexed. This notion was further supported by the inclination of dogs to hump the legs of humans. However, these are normal sexual actions of dogs. The early interest in sex, the mounting and the humping are instinctive reactions that prepare the dog for future procreation.

A dog owner would have different reasons for breeding and for not breeding the dog. Breeders would naturally breed the dog for monetary reasons. The prospect of holding cute puppies that look and behave lot like the pet would be reason enough for an owner to breed the pet. A dog owner would want to perpetuate the genes of a winner thus the dog will be bred . On the other hand, a pet owner would make sure that the pet is not given a chance to breed especially if no possible homes for the puppies will be found. So as not to contribute to the population of homeless dogs, responsible owners would have the pet neutered. It is therefore necessary for a dog owner to know at what age the pet can be bred.

Attainment of sexual maturity is largely influenced by the size as well as the breed of the dog. Not all dogs would attain puberty at the same age. Commonly though puberty is attained when the dog is about 6 to 12 months of age.

Small breeds are rather precocious as they are noted to attain puberty at a much earlier time than large breeds . If small breeds would be sexually active at 6 months old, it would take about a year for large breeds to start cocking the legs. Unlike small breeds that are ready to mate at six months of age, large breed of dogs would be interested in mating only when it is about a year old. Dogs must not be allowed to mate before the first birthday when the sperms are already fully developed.
