The Proper Age To Beging Training Your Puppy.

If you are completely new to the world of dog training, then you are probably thinking that some tips on the best ways to train your dog is going to help you immensely, so that you can teach your dog how to behave. Listed below are some tips to get you started with your dog training aspirations.

The earlier you start training your dog the better. It is much easier to train a young puppy than it is an older dog. This is not to say that older dogs cannot be taught new things, however, it does take longer and more perseverance to train a dog the older it is.

If your dog just can't stay away from your garden, try a harmless repellent that you can sprinkle around your plants. You can find them at many local retailers and nurseries. If you can't find these products, try moth balls or alum powder which have also been shown to be effective at keeping dogs away.

Realize an older dog's limitations. An older dog will never be able to be trained perfectly: they all have little quirks that you should learn to embrace! Remember that if you adopt an older dog, they may be very set in their ways. While it may be possible to teach them new habits, sometimes it's best to concentrate on the negative things that you can alter, and learn to live with the other things.

A great way for your dog to learn new skills (or brush up on some old ones) is to attend classes at your local dog training center. If you are not sure of where to take him, your friends or veterinarian may be able to help you find a place that best suits your needs.

When training your dog, never forget that he is a dog. It is easy to get frustrated with your pet when he is not learning something simple, but keep in mind that it sounds simple to you in human terms. Try to think like your dog and see things as he does - this might change how you train him, which will in turn positively change how he reacts to the training.

Be consistent when you're training your dog. Your dog doesn't understand what your praises mean. Pick one form of praise to use such as: "Good Girl" or "Well Done" and use the same phrase every single time. This will teach your dog that you are praising him or her, and when your dog hears the chosen phrase, he or she will understand it is a compliment.

If your dog does not seem to be responding to your training, make an appointment with your vet. If your dog is not learning properly, it does not mean they are dumb. Sometimes physical and occasionally mental maladies could cause your dog to not respond properly to training. Your vet may be able to give you some indication to the problem.

As you can see, there are many methods of training available to you, to make your dog the best canine he/she can be. Try any or all of these techniques to begin teaching your pet how to behave properly in your home. An educated animal will be a incredible friend for years to come.
