Caffeine Poisoning in Dogs

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs can be poisoned by caffeine and this substance has no antidote! Caffeine is a highly toxic for dogs and for other pets although this substance can be safely consumed by humans. Coffee, tea, chocolate are some of the food items that contain caffeine. Caffeine is an ingredient added to soft drinks and sodas to give the beverage a pleasant bitter taste. Dogs eat anything thus owners have to be vigilant in keeping the dog away from drinking coffee, tea and chocolate and also from eating coffee beans and coffee grounds.

Caffeine is a substance naturally produced by coffee beans, cacao beans and tea. Coffee is one of the most if not the most popular drink all over the world. Apart from the voracious appetite dogs are also indiscriminate eaters thus stomach upset and poisoning are common occurrences. Caffeine poisoning is more likely to happen in dogs with coffee drinking owners. Dogs love to beg for food and owners cannot resist the pleading looks of the dog thus coffee and other people foods will be shared with the dog. Dogs find the contents of the trash can very interesting. This habit can result to poisoning if the dog has feasted on coffee grounds found in the trash.

More than 150 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight is already a lethal dose for the dog. Signs of caffeine toxicity will start to manifest if the dog has ingested more than the tolerable amount of caffeine. Increased heart rate is one of the effects of caffeine over dose as this substance would trigger the production of adrenaline, the hormone that causes the acceleration of heart rate. Increased respiratory rate and a change in behavior will be noticed in dogs that have consumed food items containing large amounts of caffeine. Muscle tremors can be noticed. Severe cases of toxicity will have the dog bleeding and seizing. Arrhytmia and generalized congestion are other signs of caffeine toxicity.

Caffeine taken in the amount tolerable to the dog's system does have some healthful benefits to the dog. Coffee is an effective diuretic. The dog's muscular strength is enhanced and the nervous system is stimulated by caffeine. By accelerating the heart rate, caffeine also has the useful effect of enhancing general circulation.

Caffeine when given in the amount that can be tolerated by the dog has the effect of improving peristalsis, the intestines' motion of propelling waste materials towards the anus. Coffee is given to dogs suffering from cardiac function insufficiency as caffeine directly affects the heart muscles thereby increasing cardiac muscle strength. However, dog owners have to be very careful not to give the pet too much of this substance.
