Human Foods Dangerous to Dogs

All dog owners must be aware that not all human foods can be given to the dog. Dogs are treated as family members thus human food will be shared with the pet. Pieces of hotdog, ham and bread are usually given to the dog and used as training treats but some people food must not be given to dogs because the dangerous effects they have on the health of the pet.

Fruits are healthy people foods. People derive lots of vitamins from fruits. Not all fruits can be safely consumed by dogs. Grapes for instance have an unknown toxic substance that when eaten by the dog in large amounts can cause kidney damage. Avocado is another fruit that is unsafe for dogs. The dog must not be allowed near an avocado tree as not only the fruit is poisonous but also the leaves, bark and seed. Eating avocado can cause the dog to vomit and to have diarrhea. Avocado is lethal as it can cause fluid to accumulate in the dog's heart causing breathing difficulties that can lead to the death of the dog.

A dog owner that loves chocolate must ensure that this comfort food is kept out of reach of the pet. Chocolates and other products that contain caffeine like coffee and tea has methylxanthines, a substance that is dangerous to dogs. Methylxanthines causes vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Dogs that have eaten these foods become hyperactive. Methylxhantines results to abnormal pumping of the hearty thus panting will be noticed in the dog. Small amount of a chocolate bar may not have these effects but if the dog happens to gorge on baking chocolate, the owner has to rush the pet to the nearest animal clinic as the effect of this human food can be fatal.

Fish is for cats and not for dogs thus pet owner should get fish for Garfield and not for Fido. In dogs, thiamine deficiency is the result of consuming large quantities of fish. Dog with thiamine deficiency would have poor appetite and can have seizures. This condition can also result to the death of the dog.

Avoid feeding the dog table scraps. Fish, poultry and meat bones must not be given to the dog as they can lacerate or create digestive tract obstruction. Fat trimmings left on the plate must not be fed to the dogs. Avoid giving the dog table scraps and other greasy people food as the dog can develop pancreatitis, a condition that occurs when the pancreas gets inflamed because of the consumption of fatty foods. Pancreatitis serious condition that can result to the death of the pet as the severe abdominal pain, the depression and the lack of appetite can take a toll on the health of the dog.
