How to clean dog urine

By Jerry Welsh

Potty training is not the responsibility of the breeder thus a new dog owner has to train the dog as soon as it was taken home. However, even pets well trained to defecate and urinate in the designated spot would still have accidents inside the house.

No matter how you love the pet, you will certainly be irritated at its habit of urinating on the Oriental rug or on the new couch. Is the urine on the carpet your punishment for not taking the dog to the park or for forgetting to fill the dog bowl again? The smell of dog urine is horrible as it can gag anyone with the toughest nose thus it must be removed immediately.

The spot soiled by the dog's urine must be cleaned not only because of the unsightly stains but also because dogs have the tendency to eliminate on the spot that has the smell of their excrements. Remember, dogs have very sensitive noses and as long as they can smell their poop or pee, the same spot will be used again and again.

You can remove dog urine from tiles by blotting the puddle with old towels until the urine is totally absorbed and then use a vinegar/water solution to remove the smell of urine. Cleaning fresh urine will be easier as the puddle of urine that is not yet absorbed by the carpet can be soaked by using old towels. Towels are absorbent but you can help soak the urine by stepping on the folded towel to apply pressure. Replace the soaked towel with another and when urine is fully absorbed, you can sprinkle baking soda on the soiled spot to remove the horrible smell of the dog's urine.

Removing dog urine from rugs and carpets would be a little tricky especially if the dog has peed for quite a while and the evidence of the pet's misdeed is the horrible smell and the damp mark. If the urine has already dried and all you see on the carpet is the stain, you need pour about half a cup of vinegar and water mixture to the stain. After about five minutes use a folded towel to soak the vinegar/water mixture as well as the urine. After the urine is thoroughly soaked deodorize the stained spot by generously sprinkling baking soda. Finish off the task by running the vacuum cleaner.
