Teaching the dog to come when called

By Jerry Welsh

Obedience training can improve the ties between man and dog. A dog that has undergone basic obedience lessons develops into good canine citizen. An owner of a dog that can do tricks will certainly be very proud of the pet's ability. Obedience training is one way of controlling a dog's behavior. Teaching the dog to come when called is one of the necessary obedience trainings as a dog that obeys the recall command can be saved from a dangerous situation. The reason why many dogs were not saved from potentially dangerous situations is because the dogs were not trained to come when called.

Dogs that are usually kept in a crate or leashed must be trained to come when called. Being energetic animals, dogs would want to run, jump and play freely. A dog that was able to break free from the leash would be in dogs' 7th heaven. Catching and reattaching the leash would be a very hard task for an owner of a dog that was not trained to come when called. Dogs have been injured and worst killed because of this kind of situation.

Teaching the dog to come when called will be easy as dogs already have the tendency to be the shadow of their masters. Dogs were even branded as Velcro pets. Apart from being hunters, dogs have curious personalities. The dog would want to obey the master but it will be excited to follow the interesting scent as well. In most cases, the interesting scent will win hands down.

Training the dog to come when called must be started when the dog is still a puppy. A place that is relatively free from distractions must be chosen to make the dog adapt well to training. Stand a short distance away from the dog and give the come command.

Expect the dog not to come during your first try thus arm yourself with a toy or a treat to encourage the dog to follow the command. A toy, a treat, a praise or a hug given to the dog after it has obeyed the command would be associated by the dog to the action and make the dog obey the command again. To prevent the dog from getting bored, the sessions must be short but the training must be repeated several times a day. If the dog has steadily obeyed the command, take the training a level higher by increasing the distance between you and the dog or calling the dog to come while you are in another room.
