Can You Be a Responsible Dog owner

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs were not branded as man's best friends for nothing. Dogs are not only affectionate animals as they are also loyal and protective of their owners. Caring for a dog is one big responsibility. Anyone wanting to have a cuddly dog but does not have the time or the inclination to provide the basic needs of the dog has best take a stuffed dog toy instead. Dog ownership is a serious commitment that would last until the dog lives. This means that abandoning a pet that is becoming a nuisance is not an option as a responsible dog owner would find ways to resolve the concern.

Human intervention was never needed by dogs in the wild. However, modern day dogs entirely depend on their human friend for their food as well as social and health needs. To make certain that the pet remains healthy a responsible dog owner would provide the pet supplements and vitamins in addition to high quality diet. A vet visit is one of the first outings of a new pet as the dog owner is aware that vaccinations, worming and general check up is necessary to keep the pet healthy.

Caring for a puppy is not unlike caring for a baby thus the home must be dog proofed to give the dog a safe environment. Dogs that are not allowed to stay inside the home must be provided with adequate shelter. Dogs have high exercise requirements thus it is very important for owners to regularly provide the pet with opportunities to exercise.

A responsible dog would make sure that the pet becomes a good canine citizen. Socialization and obedience training would benefit not only the dog and the owner but other people as well. Socialization is done by exposing the pet to new things and new situations. Obedience training that makes the dog understand and obey commands goes hand in hand with socialization in building the dog's even temperament.

Being social animals, dogs, would need love and attention from the owners. A dog owner therefore has to have time to bond with the pet. Grooming sessions would be good bonding moments and so is playing with the pet a few minutes each day. It is certainly wonderful to have a dog for a pet but because ownership entail a lot of responsibilities, the decision must be carefully considered. Dogs can be a nuisance sometime thus anyone that is not committed to owning a dog must not get one as they are not toys that can be discarded once the owner gets fed up.
