Saving Your Photos and Memories Forever

By Matthew Rivers

Due to all the possibilities for saving your photos, you're sure to find a way that works for you. The most important thing to keep in mind is that no single method is perfect. All of them have drawbacks and benefits, so it's best to select more than one way of storage just for peace of mind. I mean, when it comes to important photos or memories, this is a must.

Utilizing a DVD Collection

Having enough DVDs on hand to archive all of your photos is essential for digital photography. In fact, digital images saved on your camera's memory card is as important as the negatives in the old film cameras. For most of us, our collection from years ago completely unorganized, making photos we would like to re-edit almost impossible to find! With a good plan, however, you'll be able to easily store and find photos any time you need them.

Although one disadvantage of storing your photos only on DVD is that fire, tornado, or earthquake could take down your entire collection, when this option is coupled with online storage, you have the best of both worlds. When your computer and DVD collection are ruined at the same time, diligent work and memories apparently disappear. But, DVD storage combined with cloud storage gives you the best security and accessibility possible.

Using a Hard Drive

Although you'll find a hard drive to be less than a hundred dollars, it is not the cheapest option. Online storage often appears to be the least expensive option because many photo sharing sites offer free storage. Yet, consider whether or not the cost retrieving all of your photos on CD when needed will exceed the cost of an external hard drive.

Also, if it is used as your sole method of digital photography backup, then an external drive could be subject to the same tragedy as the hard drive in your main computer. If, in the case of theft, it would be easy to take a small drive. But worse yet, is the more common problem of your surge protector failing, frying your computer as well as the external drive.

Cloud Storage

With online backup, one deterrent could be the cost. If you haven't chosen the right service, you might not be able to recover your images in full resolution. Discovering that your images have been dropped from the free service can also be crushing, if you haven't made a purchase from the site recently. But, probably the worst option is seeing your work, slightly modified, because someone hacked into the cloud service. It's probably not a problem for most people, but it may become more common in the future.

Thus, from each of these methods, you can see that there is no easy solution to this problem. Instead, it's best to find something that is most appropriate for you, while keeping in mind that the more methods used, the better. Peace of mind comes easily with more than just one plan if there's ever a problem.
