Things that must be done after a dog bite

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs are not only named as man's best friends because of their sweet and loyal nature but also because being a true friend, dogs are seen in all the places man is seen. Unfortunately, about 5 million Americans get bitten by dogs every year. First Aid and home treatments would suffice for some dog bite wounds but some serious cases would necessitate medical attention and other dog attack incidents have even killed people.

Dog domestication was achieved by man for thousands of years. Dogs are noted for the strong ties they develop with their human families. Dogs are territorial by nature thus they manifest a protective behavior for their young and for anything that they consider as theirs. It is not surprising for a well behaved dog to be aggressive when provoked because these animals are hunters by nature. Aggressive dogs have the tendency to bite. Dog bites can also happen during playtime. A lot of dog bites are caused by the victim's own dogs.

The first thing that must be done during a dog attack is to separate the dog and the victim to prevent the dog from attacking again. Seek medical assistance even if the bite wound seems to be superficial as dog bites are susceptible to infection from the bacteria that the dog may be carrying. Vaccination status of stray dogs are unknown thus it is imperative for a person bitten by a stray to receive medical attention. The dog bite victim may have to undergo the painful rabies treatment.

It would take some time before medical attention can be given to the victim thus first aid would be necessary. For heavy bleeders, pressure must be applied directly to the wound to stem the flow of blood. Once bleeding has stopped, wash the wound with soap and water. Allow the water to run through the wound for several minutes to remove bacteria and prevent infection. Dry the bite wound area and apply antibiotic.

The biting incident must be reported to the police department and to the animal control authorities. If the dog is a stray, it must be captured to prevent other biting incidents and also to be observed for signs of rabies. If the dog was identified, reporting the biting incident to the proper authorities will be necessary as dog bites have legal implications. You are entitled to compensation for the medical bills, for the loss of earnings and for the pain and also for the PF of a plastic surgeon if plastic surgery is necessary.
