The Future of Pet Care - Automating Feeding and Watering

By Jeremy Krup

Not keeping track of how much your pets eat can be a problem, and it is an issue that affects nearly every dog or cat owner. Nothing makes people happier than actively playing with their favorite pet. In order to have an active pet you must have a healthy pet, and careful control over how much your pet eats is really important for pet health.

Believe it or not, you can buy pet equipment that takes care of feeding your pet on a regular basis. There are a lot of options, however, so figuring out which is the best automatic feeder for your cat or dog can be a headache. Have no fear, because I have taken the time to figure out which pet feeders to look for and which ones to avoid.

My first and only choice for an automated mechanical pet feeder is the Petmate Le Bistro. This is a well known pet feeder that is capable of feeding up to three regular meals a day. Each meal can have a serving size up to 2 cups. This feature makes it very convenient for feeding households with multiple animals.

The Petmate Feeder does require electricity in order to function, but this is a small price to pay for replacing the need for continually refilling pet dishes. This unit stores up to five lbs of pet kibble. The removable dish is safe for use in the dishwasher. This makes it really easy to clean up.

There are a few things that you should consider when purchasing this pet feeder. The first is to not use wet food in it. The second is to always make sure it is clean. The third and final consideration is ensuring that you don't buy extremely small pet kibble, as the pet feeder might not work correctly.

So now that your dog or cat is eating on a regular schedule, how about we complete the package and get their fresh water needs taken care of. You know it and I know it - fresh water just tastes better than stale, standing water. By eliminating the need to provide fresh water along with their dry food you will find your stress melting away.

Drinkwell's pet fountain keeps the water it provides extremely fresh and purified, thanks to it's submersible pump and charcoal filtration system. One reason we really like this pet water fountain is that it holds a ton of water (up to 168 ounces), allows you to easily replace the filter, and has a snap on lid. Our pets love drinking from this fountain because of it's waterfall effect.

Taking the drinking fountain apart isn't hard, and there are several videos available online that detail the entire process. I can't stress this enough - keeping the water fountain clean will keep your pet healthy. Your pet deserves a clean supply of fresh water.

I also wanted to touch on important accessories that you might need for automating your pet feeding schedule. One really important thing to buy are replacement filters for your Drinkwell fountain. Changing these filters regularly will ensure that the drinking water tastes fresh, and most importantly is fresh. Make sure you buy the real thing - knockoff filters could potentially poison your cat.
