Registered Breeders Are The People To Contact For Lab Puppies For Sale In Iowa

By Casandra Newton

Lab puppies for sale in Iowa will hopefully belong to a registered breeder. You can then be assured that the puppy you buy will be healthy and will have no genetic problems which could surface later. Responsible breeders will breed from disease-free stock and will give the puppies a good beginning. The Labrador is a very popular breed and puppies should be easy to find. There will be listings of breeders with breed societies and kennel clubs. Newspapers and periodicals may also have advertisements for puppies for sale.

The Labrador has a long history and was first used by fishermen in Canada to assist in retrieving fishing nets. Its full name is Labrador Retriever. It invariably has a very kind temperament and is renowned as a family dog. It is extremely gentle and patient with young children and gets on well with other pets. The majority of guide dogs for the blind are Labradors. It is also used as assistance and therapy dogs, as a hunting companion, and in search and rescue. The police, military and other official bodies all use Labradors in detection work.

There are three colors recognized. These are chocolate, black and yellow. The color of pups is controlled by genes and the three colors can occur in the one litter. Meeting the parents of your prospective puppy is a good idea. Pups often inherit the disposition of their parents.

Adult males can reach 90 pound or more in weight so these are not small dogs. Breeders may breed slightly shorter, stockier dogs along conformation lines or breed field dogs which are slightly taller and leaner. Dogs bred to work in the field may be more energetic although all make great pets. The dogs have webbed toes and love the water. They may become expert at escaping if they feel neglected and become bored. They are intelligent and inquisitive dogs.

In some climates, the Labrador sheds twice a year while in more temperate climates they may shed continually. The webbed toes also act as snowshoes preventing snow from balling up under the feet. The coat is somewhat oily and has good water-repellent qualities. The tail is often classified as an 'otter' tail as it is quite broad and strong. This is another distinctive feature of the breed.

This is a slow-maturing breed. They seem hyperactive as pups and may not 'grow up' until around three years old. They become quite focused and single-minded at times and need obedience training while young. They can be very strong and hard to manage if not taught some manners as a young dog.

Eating is a Labrador's favorite pastime. They become adept at begging more food from their family but this can lead to health problems later. They have a tendency to wander off either with a new-found friend or just when exploring. It pays to have a micro-chip inserted in your pup so that, should he go missing, his home can be traced.

Labradors are susceptible to some eye conditions including corneal atrophy, cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy and retinal dysplasia. A responsible breeder will have breeding stock assessed for these. Luxating patellas occur in some dogs as does elbow and hip dysplasia. Ask to see documentation regarding screening for these problems. When looking for lab puppies for sale in Iowa the best people to contact are registered breeders.
