Dog Running Gear For Advanced Runners

By Tara Webb

Many individuals who are trying to gain or maintain a healthy weight through lifestyle changes take up jogging or a run every day or perhaps several times a week. What seems to be very helpful in motivating beginners to get up every morning and go at it is the love and dedication of a canine friend, waiting happily to run alongside them. Dog running gear helps outfit dogs old enough to accompany their humans on runs in a safe and convenient way.

If you are just starting out as a runner and want your four-legged friend to come along with you, you should first make sure he or she is ready. There are some breeds of canine that are not meant to run alongside their owners. Your furry friend will also need to be of a certain age before you can safely have him or her tag along on your route. A stop at the family vet's office to determine your pup's health might be the first stop in your path to good health.

Men and women who have had dogs accompany them on their runs know that a leash that wraps around their waist is more comfortable then a conventional leash. Dogs can pull when excited or provoked by the sight of something unusual. This can be harmful to your arm, wrist and possibly your entire body if you are knocked off balance or pulled to the ground.

Most waist leashes allow you to have your exercise partner run at your side or in front of you. This is a choice that you can make that is best for both you and your canine. The waist portion should be padded for maximum comfort and some come with a water bottle hook.

It doesn't matter what part of the country you live in, you should invest in booties or what some companies label clogs for dogs. These are small padded boots you slip on your dog's feet before you head out on your run with him or her. They are designed to protect the pads of their feet from snow, ice, hot pavement and small sharp particles that could hurt their paws.

There are special water holders dogs can carry for your run. These are a type of bladder built into a backpack and will evenly distribute over the dog's back. You may also be interested in purchasing a smaller backpack with pockets so your canine can carry your ID, keys and cell phone.

When you first begin your exercise routine with your pup, you will want to start out slow. Beginning with short runs for a few days and then slowly progressing to longer and longer runs will be beneficial for both you and your four-legged partner. If you pup seems to get tired, stop and offer him or her water and a short rest before continuing.

Dog running gear offers individuals a way to exercise with their canine friends safely and efficiently. There are many different types and styles of equipment to outfit your pup for a run on a dirt trail or a paved sidewalk. It may take a little time, but you will find what works best for you both as well as something in your price range.
