Important Guidelines For Training Beagles With Ease

By William Donell

When deciding to buy a new pet, many people choose Beagle puppies without realizing that these dogs take a lot of work to care for properly and are different from other dogs in many ways. Training Beagles properly with the correct knowledge about their temperament and habits will go a long way in ensuring that these dogs are great pets and companions, rather than difficult pets that cause damage and frustration.

Some common problems found in the behaviors patterns of Beagles include digging, chewing, howling or whining, persistent barking, separation anxiety and jumping up against people. Unfortunately, most tips found in dog books will not easily solve this problems, as this breed of dog requires special care and attention.

Dogs often dig because of boredom. It is a good idea to provide your dog with sufficient toys to play with. It may also be a good idea to allocate a specific garden area where digging is permissible. A Beagle will also howl or bark to get attention, so training may include using a specific word to condition the dog to know when to be quiet.

Regardless of the behavior being addressed, one should be confident and assert oneself as being in charge. Hitting is not constructive. Rather, one should use a firm tone of voice to correct behavior. Good behavior will persist if rewarded with a snack and a gentle tone of voice.

Beagles are known for their tracking abilities and will run wild to follow a scent. This is why they will need to be kept on a leash when going out for walks, and it will take some practice to teach proper behavior when leashed. Remember not to spend extended lengths of time teaching your dog, as their distractible nature will make it difficult for them to stay focused for too long.

With such energetic, boisterous dogs, exercise in an integral part of training and keeping your pet happy and healthy. Playing or running before leaving the house and upon returning will help to release pent up energy and will minimize the chances of separation anxiety. Without enough play time, these dogs will likely welcome you home with a destroyed garden.

Socialization is also very important. This refers to socialization to other dogs as well as people so that the dog can learn to socialize positively, rather than becoming aggressive towards strangers. One should reprimand jumping from the start by using a collar and stern commands, followed by treats for good behavior.

Chewing is another common habit that leaves these dogs in trouble with their owners. It is important to break the habit early by not allowing them to chew peoples fingers when they are puppies. A good deterrent for chewing is bitter apple.

Overall, training Beagles will require a lot of work, dedication, patience, and very importantly, consistency. The rewards will be vast once your new pet learns acceptable behaviors in order to interact as a family pet. Bear in mind that it will take time, so start with very basic discipline and commands and work your way up. Trying to teach too much at once will overwhelm the dog. It may be a good idea to have a look at some books specifically focused on Beagles, or for more information on the internet.
