Easy Solutions For Livestock Problems

By Lianne Derocco

There are many challenges that go along with raising hogs and other types of livestock. It doesn't matter whether your farm is smaller or a large-scale operation, problems can occur from time to time. When problems do arise, solve them using the most eco-friendly methods available.

Disease control is a huge part of livestock management, and there are ways to reduce the risk of illnesses such as bovine tuberculosis and other serious diseases. For instance, apply wildlife management techniques to reduce the number of deer that enter your property. Deer can contaminate hay and feed which leads to serious illness for your animals. Other animals also can pose hazards so research ways to reduce the impact that wildlife will have on your hogs, cattle or dairy cows.

If possible, keep a closed herd and this will definitely be an excellent way to reduce your risk of disease. When you purchase new animals, keep them isolated until you are sure they pose no risks to your other animals. Have a veterinarian test new animals, as well, ensuring that they are healthy and free from a variety of illnesses. If you do have a sick animal, you need to keep it separate until it is well and no longer can expose other animals to the illness.

Livestock produce waste and they produce a huge amount of it, and if you deal with livestock, waste management will be a huge part of your job. If not properly treated, waste units can become crusted and clogged and can be a cause of serious illnesses among your animals.

Fortunately, there are several natural products available to tackle issues associated with livestock waste. Activator Plus, for example, treats top level crusting and pull plug systems, as well as deep pit containment. This product contains microbial organisms that speed up the breakdown of organic solids present in waste and sludge.

Another product to consider is the Agra Sphere. These are biodegradable, chemical-free spheres that you simply toss into the waste system and will work to reduce odors, flies and more importantly, to prevent the formation of crusting. Each of these specially formulated spheres will treat more than 55,000 gallons of waste or sludge.

Both of these products are veterinarian-approved and safe not only for all livestock, but also for humans, as well. If heavy crusting is in place, it is recommended that you first treat with Activator Plus and then begin using the Agra Spheres after the crust has been liquefied.
