Understanding Schutzhund Trained Dogs

When looking for a dog to protect either your family or your business, you want one that can complete the task at hand at the time.

Many dogs can be trained to be protective or to attack an intruder or other person as needed, but a Yorkshire terrier is not likely to stop a 300 pound man from picking up your items and walking away with them. You need a dog of some size to make them an effective tool for the job at hand.

On the other hand, if you want to train a dog to detect drugs or other substances, then only a keen nose and a strong desire to work for the handler and the ability to be trained are needed.

In either case, these Schutzhund trained dogs can be worth their weight in gold, or more, when providing the needed services.

For the first category, law enforcement or protection, the list of dogs that typically work best are; German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Giant Schnauzers, Bouvier des Flanders, Dutch Shepherd Dogs, Beaucerons, American Bulldogs, Boxers, Black Russian Terriers, Airedale Terriers, and the like. Please note that all of these are dogs of some size, and could take down a large human with the proper training.

Before training can start they are given personality and obedience tests to see if they can complete their training successfully. They must also pass distracability tests to make sure that loud noises, or a large number of people, cannot distract them from the task at hand.

Modern Schutzhund trained dogs must pass a test that consists of three phases: tracking, obedience, and protection.

All phases must be passed in the same test or the animal does not move on to the next level. There are three levels to the training, with the last one being the most difficult to pass, but this level also shows which are the most reliable and well trained of all the dogs.

While most of the Schutzhund trained dogs are used for protection or law enforcement purposes, their scent tracking and obedience skills make them excellent tools for finding lost humans or pets, or anything else that can be tracked. In many cases such as earthquakes, floods, or other natural disasters, these keen animals are used to locate any survivors who might be buried and unable to move or speak when humans are looking for them.

They also make excellent family dogs as they bond strongly and can be used to keep a small child from walking into danger, or being taken by someone who means them no good.

If one has need of a dog like this, there should never be any reason to fear they will turn on you, unless you try to hurt another person they are trained to protect.
