Popcorn - Good Training Treats for the Dog

By Jerry Welsh

It is not uncommon for dog owners to be very vocal in their professed love for the pet. In a lot of cases, dogs are not considered as pets but as members of the family. Dogs therefore, would be taken anywhere the family goes and included in all activities of the family. Dogs are seen sleeping with the family and eating the kind of foods the family eats.

Dog owners mean well in sharing their food with the pet. A lot of dog owners though are not aware that some human foods are toxic to dogs. It is a common belief of dog owners that human foods are expected to be good for dogs too. Some human foods cannot be metabolized by dogs and therefore would cause the dog harm.

One of the favorite human snacks given to dogs are popcorn. Dogs of popcorn eating owners will most certainly develop a taste for this snack. The family members and the pet dog grouped together around the TV set is a common sight. The family will be sharing a big bowl of popcorn and as expected, the dog will have its own share of the snacks too.

Dog owners can allow the pet to have popcorn as this is one of the human foods that can be safely eaten by the dog. Popcorn is not one of the human foods that cannot be tolerated by the dog's system thus this snack can be safely given to the pet. Dogs, like humans would benefit from the carbohydrates and the fiber popcorn contain. Popcorn makes a good and handy training treat for the pet. Foods used as positive reinforcement will encourage the pet to respond well to training and popcorn will certainly make the dog follow the master's commands. Dogs are indeed are cunning but endearing pets!

Dogs can be manipulative thus dog owners have to take care not to give in to the demands of the pet. Dogs are known to have huge appetites and a bowl of popcorn will be gone in an instant! A dog that eats large amounts of popcorn can have diarrhea. Regular consumption of large amounts of popcorn can lead to dog obesity. The unpopped kernels that remain at the bottom of the bowl will still be consumed by the dog. This is a dangerous condition especially for toy breeds as the kernels can block the rectal passage of the dog.
