6 Steps For Creating Patchwork Quilts

By Sean T Saunders

Patchwork quilting is an artistic and fun activity that allows you to express your creativity. Learning how to make a patchwork quilt is pretty simple and you don't need to have much experience. All you need is the enthusiasm and patience to learn the skill. If you go along the instructions and guidelines carefully, you will be making wonderful patchwork quilts within no time. Follow these general steps to complete your quilt successfully.

Step 1 - After purchasing the required fabric material, carry out a bleed test and then pre-wash the fabric. This will help to shrink the material. Press and iron out if there are any noticeable wrinkles in the square fabric or backing. Decide how large you'd want your quilt to be, where the ties will be and how you'll lay out the squares in the quilt.

Step 2 - Determine the exact length and width of the quilt squares that you'd like. Bigger the size of the squares, more the stitching work. Proceed with measuring and cutting the squares. If there are any loose threads, remove them.

Step 3 - The next step is laying out your design along with the cut squares and then finalizing your patchwork quilt pattern. Then, start sewing a seam on the sewing machine, down the pinned sides. Continue adding squares until you complete a row. You may sew whatever number of rows you need and sew them together until you finish the top. Afterwards, the seams should be ironed flatly on the back.

Step 4 - Now the outside part of the backing should be placed on a clean flat area after which you can spray some basting spray over it. Smooth out the top of the patchwork quilt over the bottom side of the batting until you flatten all three layers. It must be completely free of wrinkles.

Step 5 - The next step is to start cutting the ties. Thread a needle with each tie and then lay down the quilt backing with the side up. Stitch the ties in place, typically at every square's corners. The needle should be pushed through and forward from the bottom side of the quilt. Knot together the loose tie ends on the top and trim excess using scissors.

Step 6 - The next step is to trim the batting and the quilt from all sides with the help of scissors and ruler. Make certain that they are about half an inch smaller than the backing. Create a binding by folding the half-inch backing over the batting. Then, pin it carefully on place. The binding can then be stitched with hand or you could even sew it up on a sewing machine. To finish, remove all basting stitches and pins.

These are the basic steps involved in making a patchwork quilt.
