Dwarf Hamster Supplies

By Brett Gacek

Pet supplies are essential to providing the care any pet needs, no matter which kind of animal you are going to purchase. It works the same way with dwarf hamsters. Like any other pet, they need certain supplies to help them stay healthy and live comfortably in your home.

Out of all the pet supplies out there, the cage is the most important in caring for a dwarf hamster. These small animals thrive in a several types of enclosures, including wire cages, aquarium tanks and plastic habitats. It is important, however, to make sure that there is enough room in the cage for your dwarf hamsters to be able to run around. The need for enough room is particularly important if you buy two hamsters and they will be housed in the same enclosure, or if you buy a baby that will get a little bit bigger as it grows. The substrate of a hamster cage is another very important dwarf hamster supply. Put one to two inches of substrate over the entire cage floor. If you add five or six inches of substrate on one or two sides of the cage, your dwarf hamster will have some fun places to climb and dig in. Another thing most people aren't aware of is that dwarf hamsters can be trained to use a litter box. Look for droppings concentrated in one part of the cage. You can buy a "hamster potty" at some pet supply stores. Put the potty where you saw the large amount of droppings, then fill the potty with hay or some pelleted cat litter. Make sure you don't use clay or clumping cat litter because they might create respiratory or digestive problems for your dwarf hamster.

Chew toys are also essential dwarf hamster supplies. Most people think about dogs when chew toys are mentioned, but they are very important to hamsters. Hamsters' teeth are always growing and they need to constantly file them down. If they don't, their teeth will get so big that the hamster won't be able to close its mouth and might die from starvation. There any many sizes, shapes and colors of hamster chew toys, but almost all of them are made from soft wood. Hamster chew toys do need to be checked on a daily basis to make sure they are still safe and clean for your hamster to chew on.

You need to provide your dwarf hamster with a constant supply of fresh water to ensure it stays healthy and hydrated. Hanging a water bottle from the side of their cage works perfectly for dwarf hamsters. Most hamsters quickly learn how to use a water bottle, and using one keeps the cage cleaner; it lowers the chance of substrate ending up in a water bowl or the bowl being knocked over and spilling the water everywhere. Check the water bottle every day to make sure your hamster has fresh water and the bottle isn't leaking or cracked.

Another important dwarf hamster supply is a house that the hamster can make a nest in. They are normally shy creatures and appreciate a place to hide. With no concerns with humidity or temperature, the supplies needed to keep your dwarf hamster are limited and easy enough to supply.
